Andy McCoy joined the Friends of Des Moines Park board in 2019, bringing with him a deep-rooted passion for the city's green spaces. His fond memories of exploring Tower Park as a child with his parents ignited a lifelong appreciation for Des Moines' parks and trails. After returning to the area in 2006, Andy has continued this tradition, sharing these cherished outdoor experiences with his own family.
Andy's favorite way to explore Des Moines is by bike. You'll often find him on the Walnut Creek Trail, the Bill Riley Trail, riding through Ashworth Park, or to MacRae Park for its excellent city views. He also enjoys pausing on the city's bridges, which often connect various trails, to watch the Des Moines River flow by.
For Andy, Des Moines' park and trail system is an integral component of the community's well-being and his personal enjoyment. He recalls exhilarating experiences like "Cyclocross racing in Stone Park" and "Rock Climbing in Cohen Park," alongside the family joy of "riding bikes through the park and trail system to get to downtown destinations." This personal connection fuels his dedication to extending such "quality of life" to the wider community. Witnessing the bustling activity at diverse sites reinforces his belief in their value and fuels his pride in advocating for the system.
“The park and trail system helps me celebrate Des Moines as a place. There are so many unique places to spend time and immerse yourself outdoors or get involved in an activity. It’s good for me physically, emotionally, and spiritually."
