Outsider Stories: Andrea Boulton

ree

For Andrea Boulton, an avid park user and dedicated member of the Friends of Des Moines Parks board since 2021, the city’s green spaces aren't just amenities—they’re woven into the fabric of her life. From her days as a college student to her current role as a mom exploring with her young girls, Andrea's park journey has truly come "full circle."

From College Runs to Family Hikes

Andrea's history with Des Moines parks began when she arrived at Drake University for college. In those early years, Witmer Park was her go-to spot, serving as a quiet place for relaxation and a perfect route for a quick run. Later, living in Beaverdale, she and her dog made countless trips to Ashby Park.

Andrea's absolute favorite is Grandview Park. "It’s a hidden gem on the Eastside of DSM," Andrea says. "It has a little bit of everything: hiking trails through the woods, an updated playground, frisbee golf, basketball, tennis, and a splash pad. What more could you want?"

If she had to describe Des Moines parks in general, in a single phrase, it would be "My wild space." She finds it remarkable that such a place can exist in the heart of an urban center.

The Magic of the Outdoors

Andrea now shares her park experiences with her family, a dynamic that has reshaped how she interacts with these spaces. While her activities are often restricted to the playgrounds by the demands of two kiddos, they still make time for hiking and biking the city’s trails.

"It gives us time together to use our imaginations playing on the playground or exploring and learning new things when we're hiking through the woods," she explains.

One particular memory stands out, showing the deeper connections fostered by the parks. A few years ago, Andrea pulled her daughter out of school early for a special date at Grays Lake.

"I brought my kayak to take her for a paddle," Andrea recalls. "It was like rediscovering the park for both of us on that level with the water."

The simple outing created a lasting tradition. For weeks after, her daughter would ask to be picked up for another special adventure. To this day, the request to "go for a paddle" on a nice afternoon is a cherished reminder of that shared, unforgettable moment.

Finding Balance and Clarity

For Andrea, spending time outdoors isn't just about recreation; it's essential for her mental well-being.

"Being outdoors is a way to calm and clear my mind and find balance," she says. "It is a reminder of how big and complex the world is, even when it doesn't feel like it in an urban space like Des Moines."

As a board member for the Friends of Des Moines Parks, Andrea Boulton helps ensure that these vital green spaces remain places where families can create memories, students can find peace, and everyone can find their own "wild space" in the city.
