Earth Day Trash Bash, Iowa’s largest Earth Day volunteer event is a community-wide event led by the City of Des Moines. Earth Day Trash Bash is a partnership between the cities and citizens of Des Moines, West Des Moines, Clive, Pleasant Hill, Johnston, Metro Waste Authority, Polk County Conservation, Polk Soil and Water Conservation District, West Side Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Ingersoll Business Committee, Tree Forever, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and Water Works.  In 2017, the organizations hosted 78 teams at 70 project locations throughout the Metro. More than 1,700 registered volunteers removed litter from streets and trails; beautified public lands; improved habitat and cleaned out invasive plant species. Around 83,000 pounds of litter, tires, brush and more were removed and the combined value of volunteerism and sponsors was over $200,000 for this afternoon event.
